The Key codes for our various Windows 10 installations mostly matched, with one weird exceptions - the Windows 10 Key code for the used computer I'd just bought from Goodwill was exactly the same as the Windows 10 Key code already being used by another family computers that had been bought long ago.

I tried playing it safe by using Belarc Advisor, ProduKey, ShowKeyPlus64, plus Magical Jelly Bean Key Finder on all our PCs, to make sure I could extract all of the necessary Key codes. This turned out to be more complicated than I originally thought.

This still left me with two used/refurbished PCs that I didn't have Windows install CDs for, but I was hoping it would be easy to look up all our Windows and Office Key codes (or so I thought) by using some free software tools. No problem, I initially thought, since I still had the four physical copies of plastic Key code cards that I'd bought from Best Buy, plus had a CD for the one copy of Windows 10 I'd also bought. In addition, my Microsoft Account did not show any of the Windows 10 Key codes for our family computersl.

My Microsoft Account showed only the dates when I'd installed the first three copies of Office 2019 (I haven't gotten around to installing the fourth copy of Office 2019 yet), and it did not show me any of the Office 2019 activation Key codes. I initially tried logging into the single Microsoft Account I'd created in order to retrieve all the various Key codes, but this turned out to be fruitless. Since I was busily working on installing Windows 10 and/or Office 2019 on multiple family computers, I decided it would be prudent to look up and copy down all of the Windows and Office activation Key codes for each family computer, to help keep me from accidentally mixing them up if I needed to re-install or transfer any software in the future. It started out okay, although the process of downloading the four copies of Office via the Microsoft Account I'd created for myself was more complicated than simply booting up a CD in an optical drive. The store had sold me four plastic cards containing MS Office 2019 Key codes, instead of the more traditional boxed DVD sets that I was accustomed to using, I initially thought this was really convenient, but soon learned otherwise. Well, it turns out I needed to finally create a Microsoft Account for myself in order to download the four "one-time-purchase" copies of Office Home and Student 2019 which I'd recently bought from Best Buy.

(Yes - I was finally upgrading all our PCs from the venerable old Office 2007.) However, getting the four one-time-purchase copies of Office Home and Student 2019 I'd just bought on sale ended up being a lot more complicated. I was able to easily install that one copy of Windows 10 Home using the physical CD I'd bought, and two other used/refurbished PCs came with Windows already pre-loaded on them.

This required me to install a fresh copy of Windows 10 Home on one of the PCs.

However, I just built or bought newer computers for several family members. This method has worked pretty well until recently.

Okay, I realize the following plea for help is pretty wordy, but I wanted to give you the full background.Īs a long time Windows user, I've previously always used the local user account method for installing Windows and Microsoft Office on all of our family computers.
